
prof. Menno-Jan Kraak (University of Twente, Netherlands)
Menno-Jan Kraak is currently vice dean Capacity Building of the Faculty of Geo-Information Sciences and Earth Observation at the University of Twente. He wrote more than 200 publications on cartography and GIS. His most visible publications are books on aspects of cartography: Cartography, visualization of geospatial data (with Ormeling) and published by CRC press (4th edition 2020 – translated in 5 languages), Webcartography, developments and prospects (editor with Brown) published by Taylor and Francis 2000, and Exploring Geovisualization (edited with Dykes and MacEachren) published by Elseviers 2005. In 2014 ‘Mapping time, illustrated by Minard’s map of Napoleon’s invasion into Russia 1812’ was published by ESRI Press. This year, 2021, Mapping for a Sustainable World coedited with Roth, Ricker, Kagawa, and Le Sourd, was published by the United Nations. He is a member of the editorial board of several international journals in the field of Cartography and GIScience, he has been board member and president of the Netherlands Cartographic Society and of the Society Geo-Information Netherlands (GIN), and he was the President of the International Cartographic Association for the period 2015-2019.
